GfK TEMAX results for Kazakhstan, Q1 2020

Almaty, May 6th 2020 – The technical consumer goods (TCG) market in Kazakhstan overall sales increased by 27,0% in national currency terms in Q1 2020 vs. Q1 2019.

In the beginning of March there was a fall in the price of oil. As a result, the exchange rate of local currencies has significantly decreased in countries that economies depend on oil exports including Kazakhstan. On the background of the decline in the KZ tenge exchange rate, prices for goods in shops remained unchanged. This triggered an increase in sales of durable goods: televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. Sales growth in some product categories, such as laptops, was also affected by the expected quarantine due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
